Patio materials, compared for clay subsoil
Every material on this page works if the base under it is right and fails if it is not. That said, they behave differently on Piedmont ground, and one of them changes what a riverside property is allowed to build.
The base is the patio
On clay subsoil the surface material is a finish and the base is the structure. That means excavation to a real depth, a graded aggregate base placed and compacted in lifts rather than dumped and rolled once, a bedding layer suited to the paving, edge restraint at the perimeter, and a positive fall built into the finished surface away from the house. Get any of that wrong and the patio reads flat for two seasons and then dishes at the low point, which is where the water was always going.
The reason it matters more here than in sandy ground is that Piedmont clay absorbs slowly, at around half an inch of water per hour by the Metro North Georgia Water Planning District figure, and compacted clay absorbs less than that. Water that reaches the base and cannot leave will find a way to move the aggregate over time. A drainage path at the low edge is not an optional extra.
Concrete pavers
The default for good reasons. Dimensionally consistent, available in a wide range of formats, and segmental, which means the surface flexes rather than cracking when the ground beneath it moves a little. They also come up and go back down, which matters more than people expect: on a Sandy Springs lot the odds that somebody will need to run a drain line under the patio within a decade are not small.
Cost sits in the middle. Weaknesses are aesthetic rather than technical, in that a large field of one paver format can look manufactured, and joint sand needs occasional attention on a slope.
Natural stone, dry laid
Flagstone or bluestone bedded on a compacted base without mortar. It looks like it belongs on a wooded Piedmont lot in a way that almost nothing else does, and it ages well. The installation is slower because the stone is irregular and each piece is fitted, which is where the cost goes.
The trade is joint stability. Dry-laid stone on a grade wants a joint treatment that stays put, and the wider joints that make natural stone attractive are also the ones that grow things. On a shaded lot, that is a maintenance conversation worth having in advance.
Natural stone on a concrete base
The most permanent version, and the most expensive. The stone is set in mortar over a reinforced concrete slab, which gives a rigid, joint-free surface that furniture sits well on and that never needs joint sand. It is also the least forgiving: a rigid assembly telegraphs any movement beneath it as a crack, and repairs are conspicuous.
This is the right answer for a terrace attached to the house on stable ground, and the wrong answer on fill, on a recent regrade, or over a tree root zone.
Poured concrete
Cheapest per square foot, quickest to install, and good in the right place: flat ground, away from trees, where a clean uninterrupted surface is what is wanted. Modern finishes go a long way beyond a plain broom finish.
The weaknesses are cracking and permanence. Control joints manage where a slab cracks rather than whether it does, and cutting a slab to run services later is destructive. On a sloping wooded Sandy Springs lot it is usually the second choice.
Permeable paving
A paver surface over an open-graded stone reservoir that stores water and lets it infiltrate rather than shedding it. On a lot where added impervious area is a genuine problem, this is the answer, and on clay it works by storing the water in the base and releasing it slowly rather than by relying on infiltration alone.
It costs more than a standard paver patio because the excavation is deeper and the aggregate section is thicker, and the joints need to stay clean to keep working. On a wooded lot with heavy leaf fall that is a real maintenance item rather than a theoretical one.

Where the rules change the answer
This is the part that is specific to Sandy Springs. Properties within 2,000 feet of the banks of the Chattahoochee sit inside the state River Corridor, and within it a 150-foot impervious surface setback restricts the installation of impervious materials and structures. The city names concrete, gravel, pavers and buildings explicitly. Gravel catches people out, because a gravel terrace or parking pad rarely feels like construction.
Elsewhere in the city, designated streams carry a 75-foot buffer with the inner 50 feet undisturbed and the outer 25 feet an impervious setback, and construction inside those areas generally requires an approved variance. The city publishes a Community Development Map with a stream buffer layer, and checking it is step one on any patio near water.
Permits apply too. Sandy Springs generally requires a land disturbance permit once 1,000 square feet or more of ground is disturbed, and may require one below that where the work changes topography or drainage patterns. Where tree removal is tied to construction, and the city names patios specifically among those activities, the submittal is a Tree Conservation Plan rather than a simple removal permit.
The tree question
Compacting a base over the root zone of a mature tree does damage that appears years later as decline, and a tree that then has to come down at 18 inches diameter or more is a permit and a hole in the canopy. Where a layout has to sit near a large tree the honest options are a floating deck, a shallow open-graded section, or moving the patio.
