English Ivy Is Not a Groundcover Problem, It Is a Tree Problem

The City of Sandy Springs runs a public campaign against English ivy. On a wooded lot the case is simpler than the ecology: it loads the canopy and hides the trunk.


There is no plant more common in the shaded parts of Sandy Springs yards, and none more consistently regretted.

What the city says

The City of Sandy Springs runs an explicit public campaign on this. It describes English ivy, Hedera helix, as an invasive non-native species that can displace native plants, threaten tree health and negatively impact the environment, and it pairs that with a reminder that property owners are responsible for the health and maintenance of trees on their property.

The city’s Tree Fund also supports removal of invasive non-native plants including kudzu, privet and English ivy on public properties, prioritised by ecological value and infestation severity, with mechanical removal preferred over chemical treatment to reduce environmental impact.

That is a city with a measured tree canopy taking its canopy seriously. Sandy Springs has evaluated its canopy every two years since 2013, and its most recently published figure puts coverage at 54.5 percent for 2023 using AI-derived data.

The practical case, which is simpler than the ecological one

Set the ecology aside for a moment. On a single residential lot the argument against ivy in the trees is mechanical.

It adds weight. A mature trunk carrying a full ivy load is carrying a great deal of additional biomass, most of it high up, on a tree that has to stand through Atlanta summer storms.

It adds sail area. Evergreen foliage on a deciduous trunk means the tree presents a wind profile in January that it was never structurally adapted to present. Winter storms are when trees come down here.

It hides the trunk. An arborist cannot assess bark, cavities, fungal fruiting bodies or included bark on a stem sheathed in ivy. The defect that would have been spotted three years before failure is simply not visible.

It competes at the root zone. A dense ivy mat in the top few inches of soil is competing for water and nutrients with the feeder roots of the tree it is climbing, in ground that is already dry under a mature canopy through an Atlanta August.

None of that requires anyone to have an opinion about native plant communities. It is enough on its own.

Why it matters more here than in most cities

Because of the permit. Removing a tree in Sandy Springs at 18 inches diameter at breast height or larger requires a tree removal permit, and dogwoods and redbuds need one at 10 inches. A tree lost to a slow decline is not simply a gap in the yard, it is a submittal and a canopy loss that takes forty years to replace.

The economics run the same way. On a lot whose value rests substantially on its trees, an afternoon spent cutting ivy off the trunks is one of the highest-return hours available anywhere in the landscape.

How it gets done

The removal itself is unglamorous and slow.

Cut the vines at the base. Sever every stem where it enters the trunk, then again at chest height, and remove the section between. The material above dies in place over the following months and can be left to fall away rather than pulled, which avoids stripping bark.

Clear a ring around the base. Take the ground layer back several feet from the trunk so the vines cannot immediately climb again. This ring needs revisiting, because ivy comes back from what is left in the soil.

Deal with the ground layer separately. A large ivy mat is a project of its own. Mechanical removal, repeated over a season, is what the city prefers on its own land, and it is the approach that works on a residential slope too, provided something goes in behind it before the first storm.

Plant behind it. This is the step that gets skipped. Bare Piedmont clay on a shaded slope is a soil loss problem the moment the ivy that was holding it comes off. A woodland palette of shade-tolerant shrubs, ferns and groundcovers goes in with matting where the grade needs it, and it does the same job the ivy was doing without climbing anything.

What replaces it

The honest answer is that nothing covers ground as fast as ivy does, which is why it was planted in the first place. What a woodland planting offers instead is a layered bed that holds soil, suppresses weeds once established, and does not eat the trees. It is slower to close and better in every other respect.
